What's Stopping SMEs from Adopting AI?

The honest answers

Only a week ago, the Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce brought together small businesses on the Isle of Man to answer this question. The answers were honest:

  • "Not enough time"
  • "Don't know where to start"
  • "Worried about risk"
  • "How does it actually work in my business?"
  • "Will I lose what I love about my work?"

Fast forward to today. New research from Microsoft and Trinity College Dublin highlights a widening gap between large organisations and SMEs in AI adoption.

And here's the thing: we're not behind because we don't have the tools. We're behind because we haven't changed how we work.

How do we speed up AI adoption in small businesses?

It's not more webinars. It's not more noise about tools. It's this:

1. Leadership, not technology. Leaders need to go first. Use it. Test it. Model it.

2. Behaviour change, not just skills. AI isn't a system upgrade. It's a way of thinking and working differently.

3. Start small, but start. One use case. One process. One improvement.

4. Translate AI into real business value. Not "what can AI do?" but "what problem are we solving?"

5. Protect the human. The biggest fear we heard wasn't job loss. It was loss of passion, creativity, identity. That matters.

The opportunity

Small businesses can move faster than anyone. But only if we stop treating AI as a tool and start treating it as a leadership and behaviour shift.

The gap isn't inevitable. It's a choice.
