What Will Make Leavers and Graduates Irreplaceable?

Last week I attended the University College Isle of Man Student Awards. It reminded me just how much talent, determination and potential we have on our Island. Congratulations to every student who received an award. You should be proud of yourself and your journey. As I watched those students celebrating, one thought kept returning. We're asking the wrong question about AI and young people. The question isn't: "Will AI replace leavers and graduates?" The better question is: "What will make leavers and graduates irreplaceable?" Recent PWC research suggests that AI isn't simply eliminating entry-level jobs. It's changing what employers expect of them from day one. Routine tasks are increasingly being done by AI. What's becoming more valuable is judgement. Curiosity. Communication. Adaptability. Original thinking. In other words, the very capabilities that make us human. For over a century, we've all followed a familiar pathway. Learn. Graduate. Get an entry-level job. Build experience. But what happens when AI starts doing many of the tasks we once relied on to build that experience? Perhaps the answer isn't to teach more knowledge. Perhaps it's to develop more Human Intelligence. That means creating leavers who can: - Think critically - Work confidently alongside AI - Solve unfamiliar problems - Ask better questions - Collaborate across disciplines - Apply judgement when there isn't a right answer As a UCM Governor, I believe this is one of the most important conversations we can have. And I do this regularly, thanks to the openness of the team there to emerging thinking. For a small, agile island like the Isle of Man, this isn't just a challenge. It's an opportunity to design something different. Not simply graduates who know more. Leavers who think better. Because I believe one thing is becoming increasingly clear. The future won't belong to the people who know the most. It will belong to the people who continue developing what makes them irreplaceable. So here's my challenge. Don't abandon what makes you irreplaceable. Use AI. Challenge it. Co-create with it. Learn from it. But don't stop questioning. Don't stop imagining. Don't stop exercising your judgement. Because AI should free Human Intelligence. Not replace it. If you were designing higher education from scratch today, what's one thing you would do differently?
