One Word About AI

Yesterday I asked a room of business leaders in London to give me the first word they think of when they hear AI.
The answers were wide ranging.
Some spoke of opportunity:
Smarter. Efficiency. Knowledge. Future. Brilliant.
Others revealed something deeper:
Concerned. Slop. Not human. Cheating. Fear. Dystopian.
And I quickly realised.
None were words about the tech itself.
They were words about how people FEEL about technology.
The room seemed to be holding two diametrically opposed stories about AI at the same time.
**AI as opportunity**
A tool to work smarter, move faster and improve decision-making.
**AI as threat**
Questions about trust, authenticity, quality and what happens to human value.
But what surprised me most?
Nobody said: Strategy. Innovation. People. Learning.
And that's what I noted on my pad because that's what I use it for.
Many leaders still seem to see AI as an operational tool rather than a strategic redesign of work, leadership and human capability.
Plenty of evidence from the US confirming that.
The room yesterday wasn't anti-AI.
It was something more interesting from where I sat.
Curious. Cautious. Unresolved.
And maybe that's exactly where the real future leadership conversation begins.
People didn't come yesterday for a lesson about artificial intelligence.
They came to remember who they actually are in a world that's changing and moving fast.
And that helped me see where more focus is needed.
Human intelligence is not the problem.
Abandoning it is — knowingly or accidentally.
And yesterday, once aware of this as the big risk, we all agreed we are going to stop that for ourselves and our teams and start to move forward as Brave New Leaders.
No matter what word each of us started the day with.
If you need a mission to get you to embrace AI as a thinking partner and co strategist, consider this.
Why are you currently outsourcing or abandoning what makes you irreplaceable?
One word about AI. What's yours?
