Belong. Grow. Thrive.

Belong. Grow. Thrive. Three simple words. Three words that were quite literally stamped on my hand last night at the Annie Gill Centre Awards at University College Isle of Man. And, as I looked around the room, I realised they weren't just words. They were happening 'live'. Students were being recognised for their Life Skills, their teamwork, their perseverance, their achievements and their personal growth. There were certificates and trophies. Then there was a joyous high-energy disco. I even joined in… complete with face decoration! It was one of those evenings where you couldn't help but smile. It also reminded me of something important. We often talk about preparing people for work. But before that, we need to help people belong. When people feel they belong, they have the confidence to grow. When they grow, they begin to thrive. Life Skills isn't just a subject for students with learning differences. It's a subject for all of us. Learning how to communicate, support one another, contribute to a team, overcome setbacks and celebrate success together are skills that last a lifetime. Congratulations to everyone who received an award. And thank you to the team, families, friends and supporters who help every student at UCM find their own way to belong, grow and thrive. That feels like education at its very best.
